Ambassador Geela Ali (Ms.)
Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom of Belgium & Head of Mission to the European Union
Ambassador Geela Ali is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in both the health and foreign service sector of the Maldives. She began her professional career at the Ministry of Health of Maldives as a Health Promotion Officer in 1995 and later on took the role as the Head of Communicable Disease Control. In 2010 she also held the senior most civil servant role as the Permanent Secretary at the Health Ministry playing a key role in formulation of Health Master Plan & Policy Documents and engaged with development partners in health sector projects and policy implementation.
In 2015, she transitioned from the Health sector to the Foreign Service sector, where she first served as the Minister, and Charge de Affairs at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the UN offices in Geneva. During this period in which Maldives was a member state of the UN Human Rights Council, she engaged in sessions of the Maldives UPR Mechanism and led discussions to promote Maldivian foreign policy interests in multilateral engagements.
She also continued her career in the foreign service served as the Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Maldives in London between the period 2016-2018, where she was tasked with strengthening relations bilaterally and leading engagements with the Commonwealth.
She then moved to the Headquarters in Maldives in 2018, as an Additional Secretary and Head of the Consular Services Department in the Ministry overseeing consular services for Maldivians and managing visa and attestation services and enhancing overall consular services policy at the Ministry.
Ambassador Geela became the first women Ambassador appointed to the Kingdom of Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Union on 7 May 2024.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Health and Community Studies from Chester College of Higher Education in 1995, Post Graduate Diploma in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Mahidol University in 1998, Master of Science in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2005 and her Bachelor in Sharia and Law from Avid College in the Maldives in 2023.
